Problem:

Substitutes weren't using the school's newly piloted hallpass system and this was causing a lot of disciplinary issues. Teachers were leaving notes about e-hallpass in their plans, but this lack of uniformity wasn't properly training subs. Administration at Montevideo Middle School needed a quick, organized, and self-paced module that would prepare them to use the e-hallpass system prior to them entering the classroom. The audience included adults (both with and without teaching experience), ages 20 - 70.

Solution:

I chose to use Rise for this project because of its simplicity and easy navigation. The lesson can be accessed via smartphone, computer, or tablet, making it easy for every learner to begin the course. It was published on the county's absence management site and well as the school's website so substitutes could access it when accepting a job. The course is split into sections that answer the questions "what, why, how" and "when" to use e-hallpass. It ends with a printable summary and map of e-hallpass locations throughout the  building. Substitutes printed these PDFs themselves or received a copy upon arrival at the school.

Outcome:

Since implementation, usage of e-hallpass by substitutes at Montevideo Middle School has increased by 75%. Behavior issues occurring while students are in the hallway and unmonitored have decreased by 30%.
